Conferencing and presentation English for young academics / Michael Guest
Singapore : Springer, 2018
236 pages. : illustrations
Ký hiệu phân loại (DDC): 418
This book discusses and demonstrates the types of English discourse used at academic conferences and offers guidance to prospective conference participants from multiple perspectives. It is a combination of research taken from numerous academic conferences attended and observations made by the author, based on well-established research methods in applied linguistics, as well as a guidebook aimed at students, ESP teachers, and young academics and professionals wishing to upgrade their skills to participate fruitfully in, and contribute to, academic conferences. It offers academic novices and non-native speakers of English in particular much that is new and practical, far beyond the realm of simple 'presentation tips'. It addresses various topics, such as chairing discussions, poster management, discussion sessions, the TED phenomenon, workshops, and the emerging field of English as a lingua franca. The style alternates between the accessible and practical, and the analysis of the linguistic categories underpinning the discourse: genre analysis, the nature of the specialist discourse community, features of academic spoken discourse, and the presentation as multimodal narrative are all explored. The book includes authentic samples of model speech discourse throughout, along with questions and exercises for deliberation or practice in each chapter.

Contrastive linguistics / Ping Ke
Singapore : Springer, 2019
xiii, 210 pages. ; 23 cm.
Ký hiệu phân loại (DDC): 418
This book serves as an introduction to contrastive linguistics - the synchronic study of two or more languages, with the aim of discovering their differences and similarities, especially the former, and applying these discoveries to related areas of language study and practice. It discusses the principles and methods, and contrasts English, Chinese, German, and other languages at phonological, lexical, grammatical, textual, and pragmatic levels, focusing more on the useful insights contrastive analysis provides into real-world problems in fields such as applied linguistics, translation and translation studies, English or Chinese as a foreign language, and communication than on the discipline itself.

Law, language and translation : from concepts to conflicts / Rosanna Masiola Rosini; Renato Tomei
Cham [Switzerland] : Springer,2015.
xiii, 94 pages. ; 24 cm.
Ký hiệu phân loại (DDC): 340.14
This book is a survey of how law, language and translation overlap with concepts, crimes and conflicts. It is a transdisciplinary survey exploring the dynamics of colonialism and the globalization of crime. Concepts and conflicts are used here to mean "conflicting interpretations" engendering real conflicts. Beginning with theoretical issues and hermeneutics in chapter 2, the study moves on to definitions and applications in chapter 3, introducing cattle stealing as a comparative theme and global case study in chapter 4. Cattle stealing is also known in English as "rustling, duffing, raiding, stock theft, lifting and predatorial larceny." Crime and punishment are differently perceived depending on cultures and legal systems: "Captain Starlight" was a legendary "duffer"; in India "lifting" a sacred cow is a sacrilegious act. Following the globalization of crime, chapter 5 deals with human rights, ethnic cleansing and genocide. International treaties in translation set the scene for two world wars. Introducing "unequal treaties" (e.g. Hong Kong), chapter 6 highlights disasters caused by treaties in translation. Cases feature American Indians (the "trail of broken treaties"), Maoris (Treaty of Waitangi) and East Africa (Treaty of Wuchale)

Making way in corpus-based interpreting studies / Mariachiara Russo; Claudio Bendazzoli; Bart Defrancq
Singapore : Springer, 2018.
xvi, 215 pages. : illustrations (some color) ; 25 cm.
Ký hiệu phân loại (DDC): 418.02
This book presents a collection of state-of-the-art work in corpus-based interpreting studies, highlighting international research on the properties of interpreted speech, based on naturalistic interpreting data. Interpreting research has long been hampered by the lack of naturalistic data that would allow researchers to make empirically valid generalizations about interpreting. The researchers who present their work here have played a pioneering role in the compilation of interpreting data and in the exploitation of that data. The collection focuses on both of these aspects, including a detailed overview of interpreting corpora, a collective paper on the way forward in corpus compilation and several studies on interpreted speech in diverse language pairs and interpreter-mediated settings, based on existing corpora.
