From the 80 % ethanol extracts of the roots of Myxopyrum smilacifolium (Wall.) Blume, a new compound (4,8-dicarbomethoxy-iridoid-1a-O-B-D-glucopyranoside, M8803) and a known compound (myxopyroside, M8804) were isolated. Their chemical structures were identified by spectroscopy in reference to the literature. The isolated compounds (M8803 and M804), total 80 % ethanol extract (M87) and fractions were evaluated for cytotoxity against the following four cancer cell lines: MCF7, A549, HL-60, and HepGZ. Experimentally, none of these tested samples exhibited cytotoxic activity.
