| To create new chemical compounds of antibacterial and antifungal acitivity, five new benzimidazole-2-thione (BI2T) derivatives were synthesized. They were all characterized by melting point, TLC, and structurally elucidated by UV, IR, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR and MS. Bioactively, the BI2T acylization was investigated for antibacterial and antifungal activity on the referenced bacteria (Escherichia coli ATCC 25922; Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853; Streptococcus faecalis ATCC 29212; methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) ATCC 43300) and fungal strains (Candida albicans ATCC 10231; T. mentagrophytes and T. rubrum). Of these five synthesized derivatives, 3a (1-acetylbenzimidazol-2-thion) and 3b (1-Benzoylbenzimidazol-2-thion) compounds displayed moderate antibiological activity against E.coli, MRSA, Candida albicans and T. rubrum. 3e delivative (1-Thiosalicyloylbenzimidazol-2-thion) displayed moderate antibiological activity against MRSA, Candida albicans and T. rubrum. Whereas, 3d delivative (1,3-Disalicyloylbenzimidazol-2-thion) displayed moderate antibiological activity against MRSA ATCC 43300; 3c delivative (1-Salicyloylbenzimidazol-2-thion) just displayed moderate antibiological activity against T. rubrum. These findings may lay basis for further study on synthesis of new antimicrobial drugs in hope of overcoming drug resistance. |
