The West's attempt to understand China has proven as difficult as China's attempt to understand the West. A Poetics of Translation is the result of academic conversations between scholars relating to issues in translation. “Translation” here is meant not only as a linguistic challenge, but also as the wider questions of cultural translation.

Exploring Explicitation In Translating English Nominalization Into Vietnamese / Nguyen Bui Thuy Minh, Truong Bach Le // Tạp chí Khoa học Ngôn ngữ và Văn hóa : Journal of inquiry into languages and cultures . - 2022. - p. 55-70. - ISSN: 2525-2674

This paper reports on one part of a larger research. The aim was to investigate and characterize different explicitating shifts that emerge from the translation of English nominals with the suffixes -tion and -er into Vietnamese. Gumul’s (2017) taxonomy of surface manifestations of explicitation was adapted to serve as the framework for qualitative corpus analysis. Quantitative processing of corpus data in the form of frequency counts was also performed to achieve the research goals. Within the limited scope of this paper, the results reveal seven types of explicitating shifts and their typical features, thereby providing further evidence for the existence of explicitation in translating nominalization. The paper concludes by proposing practical implications for translation teaching and practice.

Exploring Translation Theories
New York : Routledge, 2010

This chapter looks at a set of theories that are based on equivalence but do not assume that the relation is natural or reciprocal. For these theories, if you translate from language A into language B, and then back-translate from language B into language A, the result in language A need not be the point from where you started. This means that directionality is a key feature of translational equivalence, and that translations are thus the results of active decisions made by translators.

Idiom Translation in the Financial Press : A Corpus-based Study
UK : Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2014
272 tr. ; 21 cm.
Ký hiệu phân loại (DDC): 418.02
Bringing together disciplines such as news translation, media studies, linguistics and financial discourse, this book addresses the issue of English-Greek idiom translation in the news press. It adopts a novel idiom-typology which draws its main concepts from psychology and gives a detailed description of the idiom-translation strategies employed in the Greek financial press. More specifically, this book explores the syntactic, semantic and pragmatic changes that idioms undergo when they are translated and proposes possible parameters that license a particular idiom-translation strategy to be used in preference to another. It is suggested that the four major tendencies dominant in idiom translation, namely idiom adherence, literalization, deletion and compensation, are determined by syntactic, semantic, pragmatic, cognitive and textual parameters.
