Ký hiệu phân loại (DDC): 407 Vietnamese is the common language among different ethnic groups and the official language of education in Vietnam. The language development of minority children is a fundamental issue in the development of education in ethnic areas. On the basis of combining theoretical and practical research methods and evaluation methods; this article focuses on analyzing the current situation of the development of language competency among ethnic minority primary school students in the Northeast region in Vietnam and the potential causes. The research results indicate that the natural, economic, social, and multilingual characteristics of ethnic minority students in Northeast Vietnam hinder their enrollment, learning, and linguistic proficiency development. The findings will provide education researchers and teachers with a direction on a more appropriate content development and selection as well as teaching methods in accordance with learners and their demographic characteristics.
