A vertical empire : the history of the UK rocket and space programme, 1950-1971 / C N Hill

"A Vertical Empire describes the work in rocketry and space research carried out in the UK in the 1950s and 1960s. At one time, the programme was as sophisticated as those in the US and Russia. The projects were cancelled one by one as Britain's attempts to keep up militarily with the two superpowers weakened, as a consequence of Treasury pressure and the belief that there was no economic future in space technology." "Much of the material in the book has never been available before, due partly to the 30-year rule concerning government documents, and partly to the sensitive military nature of the work. The projects covered include rocket-propelled aircraft, large military missiles such as the medium range ballistic missile Blue Streak, the test rocket Black Knight and the re-entry experiments it carried, and the satellite launcher Black Arrow. In addition, proposed projects that could have been developed from these vehicles are covered in depth. There is also considerable political analysis of why these projects were eventually discontinued."--Jacket.

Astronautics : the physics of space flight / Ulrich Walter
Cham, Switzerland : Springer, 2018
851 pages. : illustrations
Ký hiệu phân loại (DDC): 629.4
This introductory text covers all the key concepts, relationships, and ideas behind spaceflight and is the perfect companion for students pursuing courses on or related to astronautics. As a crew member of the STS-55 Space Shuttle mission and a full professor of astronautics at the Technical University of Munich, Ulrich Walter is an acknowledged expert in the field. This book is based on his extensive teaching and work with students, and the text is backed up by numerous examples drawn from his own experience. With its end-of-chapter examples and problems, this work is suitable for graduate level or even undergraduate courses in spaceflight, as well as for professionals working in the space industry. This third edition includes substantial revisions of several sections to extend their coverage. These include both theoretical extensions such as the study of relative motion in near-circular orbits, and more practical matters such as additional details about jet-engine and general rocket performance. New sections address regularized equations of orbital motion and their algebraic solutions and also state vector propagation; two new chapters are devoted to orbit geometry and orbit determination and to thermal radiation physics and modelling.

Space tourism : adventures in Earth's orbit and beyond / Michael Van Pelt
New York : Springer, 2005
229 page. : color illustrations
Ký hiệu phân loại (DDC): 910.919
"Can we ever hope to lift ordinary tourists into orbit as routinely as we send airline passengers around the globe? Will traveling into space ever be as safe and easy as, say, a trip from New York to Paris? Author Michel van Pelt believes it will. He describes how we are on the verge of creating a viable, literally out of this world tourism industry."
