Due to the efficacy of chemotherapy in combination with surgery and radiotherapy in treatment of many types of cancer, the expense for antineoplastic agents at the National Cancer Hospital has been increasing over the recent years, to improve the effectiveness, the structure of antineoplastic agents in use therein was analysed by therapeutic analysis and ABC analysis. Evidently, phytochemical alcaloids and other natural products made up the highest percentage of expenditure (122.96 billion VND, accounting for 26.74% of the total 459.96 billion VND), followed by the target group including monoclonal antibodies (19.7%, eq. 90.6 billion VND) and proteinkinase inhibitor (15.6%, eq. 71.6 billion VND). The percentage of domestic drugs was so low as 1.92%, whereas that of brand name drugs were 60 % of total expenditure for antineoplatic agents. Group A drugs including 10 activities accounted for 76.86% of the total cost; and of these, paclitaxel was in the highest proportion (21.05%). Group B accounted for 17.21% of the medicine cost, including 7 drugs; and including 15 drugs, group C accounted for 5.93 %.
