21세기 들어 우리나라 국가발전을 구상할 때에 최대 화두는 경제적 선진화이다. 또한 기업과 정부는 경제적 선진국으로의 진입을 목표로 세우고 부단한 노력을 경주하고 있다. 경제적 선진국의 기준은 통상적으로 1인당 국민소득이 3만 달러 이상의 경제수준이다. 게다가 복지수준, 교육수준, 지역 및 계층 간 부의 균형적 분배, 시민의식, 그리고 신뢰, 질서, 투명성 등 사회적 자본의 성숙도 등에 있어서도 일정한 높은 수준에 도달해야 선진국으로 간주된다. 1인당 국민소득의 기준으로만 생각해 본다면 여타 선진국의 경험에 비추어 빠르면 10∼15년 내에 선진국 수준에 도달할 것이라는 낙관적인 전망이 나오고 있다. 이 책은 선진국으로의 국가발전을 위해 반드시 수반되어야 할 정치의 선진화를 이룩하는 데 추진해야 할 과제들을 제시하고 그 해결책을 모색하는 학문적 노력을 모은 것이다. 선진국으로의 진입을 위한 정치발전의 과제라는 화두를 놓고 지난 1년여에 걸쳐 정치학을 전공하며 여러 해 동안 학문적 교류를 해온 학자, 전문가들이 모여 논의하고 생각을 정리하여 각자의 전공 분야별로 과제와 해결책을 제시하는 연구를 진행하여 만든 공동의 결과물이다.

New conventional wisdom posits that the public in democracies is inattentive but not really ignorant nor easily swayed, and indeed quite consistent and thoughtful when it comes to national security and foreign policy issues. This volume builds on such a claim to study the attributes and impacts of public opinion on foreign and national security policy in six democracies: Taiwan, South Korea, Israel, Ukraine, Finland and West Germany. These countries face acute and sustained national security challenges posed by stronger authoritarian regimes close by, namely China, North Korea, the Arab nations, Russia and the Soviet Union. Given potential existential threats to their democracies, the public is typically tuned in, and in sorting out their policy stands, is mindful that the fundamental values of identity, sovereignty and prosperity may be jeopardized. Public opinion can indeed constrain statecraft here in these democracies ensnared in asymmetric dyads. Many have studied public opinion and national security in democracies, but few have studied national security strategy of weak powers confronting great powers. This volume is the first attempt to examine this topic. The approach here is a comparative rather than country-specific study combining qualitative and quantitative research methods to enrich our understanding of the complexity and intrigues of the interplay between public opinion and national security under the condition of regime asymmetry. The wealth of data and careful examination of various issues from different theoretical approaches makes this volume an essential guide for courses and research in comparative foreign policy, international relations and democratic processes

This study revolves around the jihad ideas of 'Abd Allah 'Azzam -- an iconic figure in the study of militant jihad in the 20th century, history of Afghan jihad against the Soviet Union, Al-Qaeda and current threat of terrorism. This study has several objectives: To render an in-depth description of his ideas by way of a review of his writing, hitherto little referenced in the literature; To identify how these ideas have inspired so many to participate in militant jihad in the Soviet-Afghan war, and indeed elsewhere; To highlight the internal contradictions and inconsistencies in 'Azzam's ideas, and to juxtapose these ideas with contemporary jihadism; To identify specific aspects of 'Azzam's ideas in order to extract key lessons for counter-ideology work within the framework of counter-terrorism. The study concludes and makes three key arguments/observations on 'Azzam's jihad ideas; 'Azzam's success in mobilising Muslims for jihad in Afghanistan was not due to his jihad ideas alone, although they mattered to him and were important tools for mobilisation. The study identifies two other non-ideational structural factors that were critical in effecting his mobilisation; Some aspects of 'Azzam's jihad ideas have serious implications on national security; Some of 'Azzam's jihad ideas diverge from dominant ideas held by current jihadist groups like Al-Qaeda and these could potentially be used to counter contemporary jihad ideas and practices of jihadists.
